Early on the fifth of October, we set off by car towards Jõhvi, despite the slippery roads and sleet awaiting us there. Our purpose was to train 50-60 conscripts on how to clean rooms effectively and organize cleaning activities (including which supplies to use, different types of dirt, which products and in what quantities to apply them, and how to maintain and store cleaning equipment).

Initially, the young men were skeptical and perhaps even annoyed that the training began at 9 AM on a Saturday morning. However, as time progressed, they became more engaged and open-minded. When Helge conducted an experiment using cleaning textiles with four different moisture levels… …cleaning textiles, the young men’s eyes were opened. Various relevant questions and thoughts emerged.

After the experiment, the young men had the opportunity to watch educational films produced for the defense forces, which detailed the use of various tools and methods in different rooms. Once the films were viewed, we proceeded to the practical session. The young men were able to immediately apply the theoretical knowledge they had gained, and they performed exceptionally well. We provided them with guidance on areas to focus on and errors to avoid.

In summary, it became clear that the young men had many relevant questions and observations by the end of the day. The overall mood was very positive, and their perspective was shifted – cleaning must be purposeful, not merely activity-based.

The last words from one conscript before his departure were: “Everyone needs this kind of knowledge.” Our reply was: “Indeed, the entire defense force.” The conscript responded: “No, not just the defense force. The whole world needs this knowledge!”
