Iru Care Home: How Digital Cleaning Quality Management Led to Higher Cleaning Standards?

Iru Care Home is a long-term care facility where cleanliness is not just a visual standard, but is directly connected to residents’ health, dignity, and safety. In daily operations, preventing infection risks and maintaining a high level of hygiene in the living environment are critically important. In cooperation with Puhastusekspert, Iru Care Home carried out an eight-month development program focused on improving staff digital skills and raising cleaning quality standards. The program was built around systematic quality management and digital transparency. During the development process, all areas and surfaces were carefully mapped, cleaning frequencies were defined, and the most suitable working methods were clarified. This resulted in clearer and more practical work instructions for cleaning staff and care personnel, helping to ensure residents’ safety. To assess quality, the Optiqo digital system and mobile applications were implemented, following the INSTA cleaning standard. Optiqo makes it possible to evaluate cleaning quality objectively, collect data in real time, and document results in a structured way. The system was also used to inventory cleaning equipment and supplies, creating a unified approach to maintaining cleanliness across the facility. Digital measurement provides management with a clear overview of the actual cleaning quality, helps identify problem areas at an early stage, and enables quick implementation of necessary improvements. As a result, a consistent and transparent quality framework was established at the care home, supporting continuous improvement in cleanliness standards.

Needs-Based and Risk-Based Cleaning Management

One of the key outcomes of the development project was the implementation of a needs-based and risk-based cleaning system. In a care home environment, this means placing greater focus on residents’ immediate living areas and high-touch surfaces, while adjusting cleaning activities according to residents’ health conditions and potential infection risks.
In cooperation with Puhastusekspert, cleaning agents and tools were reviewed, their use was optimized, and working methods were standardized throughout the facility. Cleaning staff and care personnel received targeted feedback and additional training when needed, supporting both professional development and the achievement of a consistent quality level.
Close collaboration between cleaning staff, caregivers, and nursing teams allows cleaning activities to be flexibly adapted to each resident’s individual needs. This approach supports effective infection prevention while also protecting residents’ dignity and overall wellbeing.

Measurable Cleaning Quality as the Foundation of a Trusted Service

The experience of Iru Care Home clearly shows that digital quality management does not only improve cleanliness levels, but also supports the overall performance of the organization. With Optiqo, cleaning quality becomes measurable and documented, making results visible, comparable, and verifiable. This provides confidence to management, staff, and residents’ families that established standards are not just formal requirements, but part of everyday practice.
A high and consistently measured cleaning standard helps reduce health risks and infection-related costs, improves work organization, and increases satisfaction among residents and their families. At the same time, it gives employees confidence that their work is carried out in safe conditions and in line with hygiene requirements.
Today, Iru Care Home is a strong example of how Puhastusekspert’s consulting, training, and the implementation of the Optiqo digital solution can take cleaning management to a completely new level.
This success story has also been recognized internationally and has been selected as a finalist during Cleaning Week. It is possible to vote for the project on the ISSA website. This recognition confirms that the systematic and digital cleaning quality management implemented in Estonia is competitive on a global level.
