We Began Experiments to Determine Objective Work Time.

Under the leadership of Puhastusekspert, we are developing work processes related to the use of INSTA800 within the international project “Cost Effective, Need Based Cleaning – INSTA 800”, which also involves partners from six other countries.

As a primary objective, a guideline for the successful implementation of the INSTA 800 standard was developed, consolidating the experiences of all participating countries. You can access the guideline here.

The second objective is to conduct 1,200 experiments to determine the work time matrices for cleaning five typical room types – office, corridor, WC, classroom, and staircase. We aim to ascertain room cleaning times by starting cleaning from various levels of dirtiness and achieving different levels of cleanliness. The experiments will be conducted in different countries following similar rules to ensure data reliability. We strive to measure only the work time differences attributable to the level of cleanliness, minimizing other influencing factors as much as possible.

As time and method standards for cleaning work have been developed in Finland since 1972, we rely on Finnish experience in the work time measurement processes, and the activities are led by the Finnish Cleaning Technology Association (SSTL).

Lessons learned during the initial experiments:

• In over half of the rooms, the floor was already clean, and there would have been no need to clean it, apart from removing occasional debris and waste. There was no actual necessity to mop the entire floor.
• Floors are typically cleaned daily. However, essential touch surfaces and furniture often remain uncleaned. The primary reason cited is – lack of time! Yet, this time is spent cleaning floors that are already clean.
