International Project „Advancing hygiene and cleaning training for HORECA SMEs“

Six European countries, namely Estonia, Ireland, England, Greece, Spain and Romania take part in the project “Advancing hygiene and cleaning training for HORECA SMEs”. The project has received co-funding from the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. The project will last for two years and in the spring of 2021 we will invite everyone to an event where we will present the results of the project.

What problem is the project looking for answers to?

Many small cafes, restaurants and hotels arrange cleaning as it seems best to them. They do cleaning themselves and do not outsource the service – this way knowledge about cleaning and its management may be poor. There is insufficient knowledge of the requirements for hygiene and cleanliness. There are no competencies of a cleaning manager and it is not uncommon for a person with very little knowledge of cleaning to be responsible for it. In addition, there are no modern cleaning supplies or knowledge of cleaning methods available.

The aim of the project is to offer a solution to the problem:

First, competencies needed to successfully manage cleaning in small establishments are mapped out.

The project has two results:

  1. All six partner countries map the tasks of the cleaners in small businesses and the related competencies. In regard to this, we interview small companies to make sure that the competencies we offer are needed.
  2. Based on our competencies, we create online study materials and educational games that help to successfully organise cleaning work in small businesses.

Breathing in dust and spores uses up a certain amount of the body’s energy to cope with them, resulting in reduced immunity. If a person weakened by this then comes into contact with a virus, they are more likely to fall ill. We also tend to feel more tired in such spaces.
